COVID-19 mRNA vaccine in pregnancy: Results of the Swiss COVI-PREG registry, an observational prospective cohort study
Lancet Reg Health Eur. 2022 May 29;18:100410. doi: 10.1016/j.lanepe.2022.100410. eCollection 2022 Jul.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Pregnant individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are at increased risk of severe disease, prematurity, and stillbirth. In March 2021, vaccination for at risk pregnant women was recommended in Switzerland, expanding this to all pregnant women in May 2021. Our aim was to assess the safety of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in pregnancy.METHODS: This multicentre prospective cohort study describes early adverse events and perinatal outcomes in pregnant women who received at least one dose of mRNA vaccin...

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) acute retinal necrosis and recombinant zoster vaccine
Rev Med Suisse. 2022 Apr 13;18(777):714-717. doi: 10.53738/REVMED.2022.18.777.714.ABSTRACTVaricella zoster virus (VZV) is responsible for chickenpox. Like all herpes viruses, after primary infection it enters into latency and can be reactivated afterwards. Many forms of symptomatic reactivation of VZV exist including acute retinal necrosis (ARN), an ophthalmic emergency which can lead to blindness. ARN is treated starting with high-dose intravenous acyclovir then with oral valaciclovir for a total duration of up to 3 months. Symptomatic reactivations of VZV are public health issues. The new Swiss 2022 vaccination plan incl...

Complications and cost estimations in herpes zoster - a retrospective analysis at a Swiss tertiary dermatology clinic
CONCLUSION: In this herpes zoster population at a university hospital, one in three patients was affected by herpes zoster-related complications. Age and cancer were independently associated with a high complication rate, suggesting a need to vaccinate cancer patients. Herpes zoster-related complications and the need for inpatient treatment escalated the costs per case.PMID:34964592 | DOI:10.4414/smw.2021.w30081

Smartphone-based active vaccine safety surveillance (SmartVax) at a Swiss adult vaccination clinic - a pilot study
CONCLUSION: Monitoring post-licensure vaccine safety using the active SMS-based surveillance system SmartVax is feasible in Switzerland. We observed a high acceptance in the diverse study population, including healthcare workers and IMID patients. High response rates in the elderly and reliable monitoring almost in real-time make SmartVax a promising tool for COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring.PMID:34908642 | DOI:10.4414/smw.2021.w30090
